Stack Overflow, the world’s number one question and answer site for professional and enthusiast programmers has released the results of its 2017 Developer Survey. The results of the survey on the most preferred operating system by the 64,000 developers who responded was an absolute surprise.
Contrary to popular opinion the results showed that Windows is the most-used desktop operating system among software developers. Linux, which was widely expected to be at the top, came in at a close 2nd place, with Android, AWS (Amazon Web Services) and Mac OS, occupying the rest of the top spots.
Last year, Stack Overflow predicted that if OS adoption rates hold steady, fewer than 50% of developers would use Windows.
In this year’s results, 41% of respondents said they use Windows.
