Say hello to Huawei, a global brand that has quickly grown to become one of the world’s biggest telecommunications companies since its inception in 1987, owning huge swathes of network infrastructure across different countries. A late entry into the smartphone space has turned out to be a huge advantage for the Chinese brand as the two biggest players in the space, Samsung and Apple have seen stalled sales growth. 2017 is a set to become a major turning point for the fast growing consumer brand.
Samsung currently controls 20% of the global smartphone market, Apple controls 12.5%, with Huawei coming in at a close 9.5%. With 32 million smartphone devices shipped by Huawei in 2016, the sales growth is set to continue. Should Huawei sales overtake Apple iPhone sales in 2017, driven by higher sales in emerging African and Asian markets, it will become quite clear that for the foreseeable future the mobile operating system of choice will remain Google’s Android operating system followed by Apple’s iOS
Locally, in South Africa the Chinese electronics giant Huawei is targeting almost doubling its smartphone market share in South Africa to 20% by year-end, says a company spokesperson. Huawei’s current market share is between 10% and 13%, according to a local spokesperson who did not want to be named.
The company also plans to roll out more customer service stores in the next year. The first two customer service centres were opened in Melrose Arch, Johannesburg and Canal Walk, in Cape Town in September. Services offered include training sessions, on-site device repairs, free device engraving and accessories for devices, among other things.
Previously, Huawei reported a 41%, year-on-year growth in revenue to $11.6bn in its half-year financial results. Smartphone shipments globally were at 60.56m, with a year-on-year increase of 25%.
The continued growth of Huawei’s smartphone brand on the back of Google’s Android operating system, will continue to solidify Android’s grip in the smartphone market. This also means for developers that the Android operating system will continue to provide more users and revenue growth opportunities globally
